Angel on keystone. A keystone is the wedge-shaped stone that holds together a stone arch. It is the final piece placed during construction, at the crown of the arch, and locks all the stones into position.
Scaffolding reaches up to the twelve majestic marble eagles that circle the Capitol dome. In the distance is the Minneapolis skyline.
Scaffolding goes around the entire drum of the Capitol dome.
Scaffolding on the dome allows architects to assess the level of stone deterioration.

This master carver's work station sits on scaffolding outside the Capitol's south facade. Various tools are on a nearby table for easy retrieval.
Close-up of a deteriorated festoon. A festoon is an ornamental garland, usually suspended from both ends. This festoon is made up of different kinds of fruit.
There are ornamental details on the south facade that are not seen on any other part of the Capitol building, like this lion head. This feature is also known as a "mascaron."
The definition is gone from this deteriorated flower.
Statues on the south facade are surrounded by scaffolding. There are six statues on the front of the Capitol representing the six virtues that support and assist the progress of the state: Beauty, Courage, Integrity, Prudence, Truth, and Wisdom.
